How to Achieve Great Drainage Before Installing Artificial Grass

A good artificial grass installation starts long before the grass is rolled out.

The part people usually notice is the finished lawn: neat edges, even fibres, clean joins and a smooth green surface. But the real quality of the installation often depends on what is underneath it.

One of the most important factors is drainage.

Poor drainage can cause standing water, unpleasant smells, uneven areas, movement in the sub-base and a lawn that never performs as well as it should. Good drainage, on the other hand, helps water move away efficiently and keeps the artificial grass cleaner, more stable and more usable throughout the year.

This is especially important in the UK, where heavy rain, clay soils and shaded gardens can all create drainage problems.

Achieving excellent drainage is therefore not simply a matter of laying artificial grass over the existing lawn and hoping for the best. It requires careful preparation, suitable materials and a proper understanding of the ground conditions.

Here is a detailed look at the process involved.

1. Assess the Existing Ground Conditions

The first stage is to understand what you are working with.

Every garden is different.

Some gardens have naturally free-draining sandy soil. Others have dense clay that holds water for long periods. Some already have existing drainage systems, while others may regularly flood after heavy rain.

Before any excavation begins, it is important to inspect the area and look for signs of drainage problems.

These may include:

  • puddles remaining for hours or days after rain

  • moss growth

  • waterlogged soil

  • boggy or soft areas

  • existing dips in the lawn

  • water flowing towards the house

  • blocked or damaged drains

  • heavy clay soil

  • poor falls or slopes

This initial inspection helps determine how much drainage work will be required.

A lawn that already drains well may only need a correctly prepared permeable sub-base.

A garden with serious waterlogging problems may require additional measures such as drainage channels, soakaways or land drains.

2. Check the Direction of Water Flow

Water will naturally move towards the lowest point.

That sounds obvious, but it is one of the most important things to consider when preparing artificial grass.

A garden should ideally have a very slight fall so that water moves away from buildings and towards a suitable drainage area.

If the ground slopes towards the house, water may collect near patios, walls or foundations.

Before installation, the levels should be checked carefully.

This can be done using a spirit level, laser level or string line.

The aim is usually to create a gentle, controlled gradient.

It does not need to be visually noticeable.

In fact, a properly prepared lawn can look almost perfectly level while still having enough fall to help water move in the correct direction.

3. Remove the Existing Turf and Topsoil

Once the site has been assessed, the existing grass and top layer of soil need to be removed.

Artificial grass should not simply be laid directly over natural turf.

The existing grass will die, decompose and create an unstable surface underneath.

Typically, the area is excavated to a suitable depth.

The exact depth will depend on the condition of the ground, the type of installation and the materials being used.

For many domestic gardens, this may involve removing around 50 to 100 mm of soil, although deeper excavation may be needed where drainage is poor.

The excavation stage is also a good opportunity to remove:

  • roots

  • large stones

  • organic material

  • old turf

  • weeds

  • soft soil

  • rubble

  • damaged paving

  • any unstable material

A clean, stable excavation gives the drainage system and sub-base the best possible foundation.

4. Deal With Heavy Clay Soil

Clay soil is one of the biggest challenges in artificial grass installation.

Clay holds water.

Instead of allowing rainwater to pass through quickly, it can behave almost like a bowl.

If artificial grass is installed over poorly draining clay without proper preparation, water may pass through the grass but then become trapped underneath.

This can lead to standing water and a permanently damp base.

In clay-heavy gardens, additional excavation may be required.

The installer may also use a more open, permeable sub-base material to encourage drainage.

In more serious cases, additional drainage systems may be necessary.

This is why the condition of the original soil matters so much.

The artificial grass itself may be highly permeable, but the water still needs somewhere to go once it has passed through.

5. Consider Installing a Drainage Membrane

A geotextile membrane is often used during artificial grass preparation.

Its role depends on where it is installed.

A membrane beneath the sub-base can help separate the stone layer from the soil underneath.

This can prevent the sub-base material from mixing with soft soil over time.

It can also improve stability.

In some installations, a weed membrane may also be used to reduce the risk of weeds growing through the surface.

However, the membrane needs to be appropriate for the job.

A completely non-permeable material should not be used where water needs to pass through.

Good drainage depends on using materials that allow moisture to move through the installation.

6. Install a Permeable Sub-Base

The sub-base is one of the most important parts of the entire installation.

It provides stability, supports the artificial grass and plays a major role in drainage.

For areas where drainage is a priority, a free-draining aggregate is generally preferred.

Common options may include crushed granite, limestone or other suitable aggregates.

The exact material used will depend on the project and local conditions.

The sub-base is spread evenly across the excavated area.

It then needs to be compacted properly.

A vibrating plate compactor is normally used to create a firm and stable surface.

The important point is to achieve stability without completely preventing water movement.

The material should lock together but still allow water to travel through the spaces between the particles.

7. Use Type 1 Carefully

MOT Type 1 is commonly used in landscaping and construction because it compacts extremely well.

It creates a very strong base.

However, in areas with drainage problems, standard Type 1 may not always be the best choice on its own because its fine particles can make it less permeable than more open-graded aggregates.

For gardens where rapid drainage is important, installers may choose a more permeable alternative such as Type 3 aggregate.

Type 3 contains fewer fine particles and therefore allows water to move through more easily.

The correct choice depends on the ground conditions.

A strong base is important, but so is allowing water to escape.

8. Create the Correct Sub-Base Depth

The depth of the sub-base will vary depending on the application.

A lightly used decorative lawn may need less preparation than an area used by children, pets or heavy garden furniture.

The condition of the existing ground also matters.

Soft or unstable soil may require a deeper sub-base.

As a general principle, enough material should be installed to create a stable platform that will not sink, shift or become uneven.

The material should normally be installed in layers rather than simply tipped into one deep section.

Each layer can then be compacted thoroughly.

This gives better stability and reduces the risk of future settlement.

9. Install Additional Drainage Where Necessary

Some gardens need more than a permeable sub-base.

If the existing ground is particularly waterlogged, additional drainage may be required.

One option is a French drain.

A French drain normally consists of a perforated pipe surrounded by clean stone.

Water enters the stone, travels into the pipe and is then directed towards a suitable drainage point.

Another option is a soakaway.

A soakaway collects water and allows it to gradually disperse into the surrounding ground.

However, soakaways are only suitable where the soil conditions allow water to drain effectively.

They are unlikely to solve the problem if the surrounding ground is extremely heavy clay.

Drainage channels may also be installed along patios, retaining walls or other hard surfaces.

These can help collect surface water and prevent it from flowing onto the artificial lawn.

10. Think About Drainage Around Buildings

Artificial grass is often installed next to houses, garages, extensions and garden rooms.

Water should never be encouraged to flow towards a building.

The prepared lawn should ideally fall away from walls.

Drainage channels may be useful where the lawn meets a patio or building.

The finished level should also be considered carefully.

Artificial grass and sub-base materials should not be installed in a way that bridges or blocks damp-proof courses.

Professional installers should always pay attention to finished ground levels around buildings.

11. Add a Laying Course

Once the main sub-base has been installed and compacted, a finer laying course is often added.

This may consist of granite dust or another suitable fine aggregate.

The laying course helps create a smooth surface for the artificial grass.

It allows small imperfections in the sub-base to be corrected.

The material is spread evenly and compacted.

However, it should not be used to compensate for a badly prepared sub-base.

A thin finishing layer cannot fix major dips, poor drainage or unstable ground underneath.

The structure below still needs to be correct.

12. Maintain a Consistent Gradient

During the final preparation stage, levels should be checked again.

This is where the installer ensures the surface is smooth while maintaining the required fall.

Small depressions can hold water.

Even if the artificial grass drains well, water may still collect beneath the surface if the base has low spots.

These low points can cause damp areas and may eventually affect the appearance of the lawn.

A long straightedge, level or laser can help identify uneven sections before the grass is installed.

It is much easier to correct these problems at this stage than after the lawn has been fitted.

13. Compact the Base Thoroughly

Compaction is essential.

Without it, the sub-base can settle over time.

This may cause dips, ripples or soft areas.

The base should be compacted evenly across the whole site.

Special attention should be paid to edges, corners and areas where soil has been disturbed.

If several layers of aggregate are used, each layer should normally be compacted before the next is added.

This creates a strong and stable foundation.

A well-compacted base also helps maintain the drainage gradient over time.

14. Test the Drainage Before Laying the Grass

One of the best steps before installing the artificial grass is to test the drainage.

Water can be applied to the prepared area using a hose.

The installer can then observe how quickly it drains.

If water pools in certain locations, those areas can be corrected before the grass is laid.

This simple test can reveal issues such as:

  • low spots

  • compacted drainage areas

  • incorrect falls

  • blocked outlets

  • poorly draining sections

It is far better to identify these problems while the base is still exposed.

15. Install the Artificial Grass Correctly

Once the drainage and sub-base are complete, the artificial grass can be installed.

Most modern artificial grass products include drainage holes or a permeable backing.

These allow rainwater to pass through the grass and into the base beneath.

However, the grass should still be laid correctly.

Joins should be properly prepared.

Edges should be secured.

The grass should not be installed in a way that blocks existing drainage channels or outlets.

Correct installation ensures that the drainage system underneath can continue to work as intended.

16. Pet Gardens Need Even Better Drainage

Drainage is particularly important in gardens used by dogs.

Dog urine needs to pass through the artificial grass and drain away efficiently.

If the base retains moisture, unpleasant smells can develop.

For pet-friendly installations, a highly permeable sub-base is particularly valuable.

Some installers may also recommend specialised drainage layers or pet-friendly infill systems.

The area should also be rinsed regularly.

Good drainage makes cleaning much easier and helps keep the lawn fresh.

17. Shaded Gardens Need Careful Planning

Shaded gardens often remain damp for longer after rain.

Natural evaporation is slower because the sun does not reach the surface as often.

This means excellent drainage becomes even more important.

A shaded artificial lawn may need:

  • a highly permeable sub-base

  • additional drainage channels

  • careful grading

  • regular leaf removal

  • occasional brushing and cleaning

Organic debris should not be allowed to build up because it can trap moisture.

18. Do Not Ignore Existing Drainage Problems

Artificial grass should never be treated as a way to hide a drainage problem.

If the existing garden floods regularly, the cause should be investigated first.

Simply covering the area with artificial grass may make the problem less visible, but the water will still be there underneath.

Professional preparation should address the source of the issue.

That could involve improving the soil, changing ground levels, installing drainage pipes or creating new outlets for surface water.

Artificial grass performs best when it is installed as part of a properly engineered landscape.

When people think about artificial grass, they usually focus on colour, pile height and how realistic the fibres look.

Those things are important.

But the quality of the finished lawn depends heavily on what is underneath.

Excellent drainage comes from careful planning, proper excavation, the right aggregate, accurate levels and a correctly compacted base.

Get those stages right and the lawn will drain efficiently, remain stable and perform well in wet weather.

Get them wrong and even the most expensive artificial grass can suffer from puddles, movement and unpleasant smells.

The best artificial grass installations are therefore built from the ground up.
